Culture Shock 20 1. BECOMING THE BULL - Atreyu
|
Production Notes: CRASH N BURN VICTIMS - Moving Units: One of our favorite bands that emerged from the disco-punk scene in 2003/04, Moving Units came back swinging this year with their Hexes for Exes album. We had already recruited one of their tracks for our post-punk mix a few months ago, but thought they needed the proper CS buff and sheen. We could tell lead singer Blake Miller's recent dive into the DJ world had rubbed off on his band, as nearly every song was a dancefloor stomper. In the end, we chose 'Crash N Burn Victims' as our test case, and gave it a once over. You now have an easily mixed intro and outro, as well as extra handclaps to turn any dancefloor into a dance orgy. 126 BPM. WRITTEN IN BLOOD - She Wants Revenge: SWR aren't CS virgins either, as we'd visited the remix treatment on tracks from their self-titled debut. And much like Moving Units, these guys have a DJ background that heavily influences their musical output. So what do you do when a band already has the dancefloor in mind? Polish, polish, polish. We tidied and tightened this track with our less-is-more approach, and in the end you have a track that moves Goths as well as any Top 40 crowd. 144 BPM. SHADOWPLAY - The Killers: This one was a tough call. We'd be lying if we said we loved this band's recent output as much as Hot Fuss. Not that they haven't caught our ear here and there since, but HF had us at hello and didn't let go for several years. Mix that with a cover of a band we hold as nigh untouchable, and well, we didn't have high expectations (not that the connection didn't make sense, after all the band named themselves after a fictional band in a New Order video). So imagine our surprise when this baby came out sounding great! We did a lot of tweaking and tightening here, fiddling with the drums as well as the synths & vocals. In the end you have a track that even Bernard Sumner might dance to. 145 BPM. |

Culture Shock 19 1. ICKY THUMP - The White Stripes
|
Production Notes: ICKY THUMP - The White Stripes: Oh man. This remix nearly killed us. Seriously, in the middle of the mixing process we very nearly drove to Meg White's house to give her drumming lessons. We love ya Meg, but PLEASE PICK A TEMPO. With all that bitching out of the way, you can probably guess the biggest change we made here. We cleaned up that 'all over' drumming & made a few more tweaks here and there. It now slides in at a beautiful 98 BPM. PHANTOM - Justice: We've been keeping an eye on these French househeads for quite a while, and this is their first entry in the CS series. We're all francophiles from our decade-long obsession with Daft Punk, so it was nice to see France getting back into the action. This was a strong track to start with, we just gave it a little TLC with an easily mixable intro & outro. 118 BPM. THE HEINRICH MANEUVER - Interpol: Since most of us here at Culture Shock started our musical lives (and for a few of us, our actual lives) in the 80's, we have a soft spot for this Brooklyn post-punk outfit. They've made their fair share of appearances on CS before, and with the release of their third album we knew we'd be busting out our black ties & 3-piece suits. This track had a very similar rhythm & flow to 'Slow Hands', so we actually picked up a few bits from a previous remix & worked them into this mix. Couple that with a few layering tricks & tweaks and you end up with this fabulous track at 137 BPM. YOUNG FOLKS - Peter, Bjorn & John: Who would have thought a folk band from Stockholm with a song centered around whistling would take off like this? They did, so we took notice and decided to tackle this song with our usual brand of je ne sais quoi. We loved the sound of the drums here, so we kept that but evened things out with some tempo mapping. You can now dance with all the other young folks at a steady 138 BPM. |

1. RUBY - Kaiser Chiefs
|
Production Notes:
RUBY - Kaiser Chiefs: What can we say about this song? It's a gem off their sophmore release that didn't get the airplay we'd have expected it to. With one of the catchiest choruses we've heard lately, there was no way we could avoid giving it the Culture Shock treatment. We synthed up the bassline, brought the drums front-and-center and cleaned up the guitar sound here and there. Now with a clean intro & outro, this baby should fit nicely at your local hipster dive. 94 BPM. MUSE - Starlight: This is Muse's second appearance in the Culture Shock series, and with the difficulties we had giving 'Knights of Cydonia' the remix treatment, it's probably a surprise we were willing to tackle the band again. Then again, we're such fans of this British trio we couldn't let this track slide. We decided to turn the volume up on the precussion in this song, as well as trimming some time off the mid-track breakdown. Actually, there's an entire laundry list of changes we made here, but careful listeners will be able to pick out most of them. The song retains it's operatic quality while not being operatic in length. A clean 122 BPM for your mixing pleasure. NORTH AMERICAN SCUM - LCD Soundsystem: We've made our love of this Brooklyn outfit's special brand of post-punk more than apparent. When we heard they were releasing new material, we were all over it like pee on Fergie's pants. Ahhh snap! This track had a few remixes already, but none of them seemed finished, so we took a couple, spliced them together and added some flourishes of our own. There's even a nod to Tone Loc in there, if you listen closely enough. 138 BPM. KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY GIRL - Good Charlotte: Yeah yeah, we know. Good Charlotte wouldn't be our first pick for a Culture Shock release either. However, this track off their latest album was just so damn catchy, how could we resist? The sound on this song is obviously a reflection on lead-singer Joel Madden's time spent with former GFF Hillary Duff at NYC's hipster-heaven, Misshapes. This track *can* work with those jaded hipster types ya know. If they can have an ironic get-down to Britney, they can do the same for GC. We added a nice intro & outro to this track and it slides in at a smooth 138 BPM. |

Culture Shock 17 1. CRAZY BITCH - Buckcherry*
|
Production Notes: CRAZY BITCH - Buckcherry: Strippers, rejoice!!! We finally have a remix even YOU will approve of! In all seriousness, this song is one of those "angst anthems" that has enough grime-y sex appeal to stand the test of time...as long as there's a pole to dance on. However, it is also one of those tracks that's not simply limited to the rock kids - you *can* play this for a more mainstream-leaning crowd as well. We gave it a time-synched intro and outro for your pleasure. Mix it and look for boobies. 98 BPM. KNIGHTS OF CYDONIA - Muse: This track marks this band's first entrance to Culture Shock lore...and it almost killed us. Seriously, this was a difficult song to do. Often times you want to add something to a very definitive song, yet stay consistent with the original's sound. Add that objective to the "rock opera" nature of this song and well...you get the point. What to do? In the end, we made some hard choices as to what to cut out and what to leave in. We decided one tempo change was enough, and to try to bring the natural rhythm of the song back to the top with some added precussion and sequencing. In the end, you have a masterpiece at 137 BPM. An accomplishment only possible by the involvement of the Culture Chock squad. MISS MURDER - AFI: Who cares what his personal preferences are - a 6/8 track that ROCKS is the BOMB!!!! This version is the epitome of what a rock remix should be: retains the best elements of the original but adds a little somthin' somthin'. This mix is so awesome we're just going to type random characters here: jjdhflgfkdf (you get the point? play it!!!) Even the haterade drinkers in your life will dig this mix. 143 BPM. FLAKE - Jack Johnson: Ok - we know that this is not a track one would commonly play during "peak hour", but it has been sitting in the Culture Shock archives for some time collecting dust. You see, this is one of those tracks that we played on our syndicated "Hit AC" mixshow that leans towards the lighter side of the alternative format. It's a simple mix - a quality drum loop, added synthesizer arpeggiation and clever filtering to make it mix-friendly. This could VERY easily work for you radio-mixshow types and chillout DJ's. Try it - you'll like it. 98 BPM. |

Culture Shock 16 1. DANI CALIFORNIA - Red Hot Chili Peppers
|
Production Notes:
CRAZY - Gnarls Barkley: This song is interesting insofar as Cee-Lo's soulful crooning was comfortable on the so-called "alternative" airwaves betwixt other, harder-leaning fare. Who would have thought this would be the Summer Song of '06? What we did here was re-master the song by bringing the drums and various synth parts that were originally buried in the mix to the surface, therefore making it more "danceable". Add a workable into and outro and you end up with a mix that's more than appropriate for a Culture Shock release. 112 BPM. JUKEBOX - Bent Fabric: This song was made popular by the Motorola cellular phone ads. Obviously that fact, along with it's inherent catchiness made it perfect for a Culture Shock release. What we did was re-work the remixes to make them DJ-friendly by giving them an intro and outro to mix into. 125 BPM for your pleasure. TALK - Coldplay: Obviously Chris Martin is a fan of Kraftwerk, otherwise he wouldn't have nicked the lead synth line from their song "Computer Love" for this release. Well, being fully aware that there would be scores of "bedroom remixes" out there trying to reincorporate the two, we figured that discretion was advised. With this in mind, we did re-attach parts of the Kraftwerk song into the Junkie XL version for the sake of posterity - this after editing down that 8:00 + monstrosity into a workable mix that's to the point, but still carries the depth of the original (if you listen carefully enough, the Kraftwerk samples are there, albeit buried in the mix). Play it for the Coldplay punter in your life. 130 BPM. TRIBULATIONS - LCD Soundsystem: We love these guys. As far as we're concerned, Jame Murphy is this generations' David Byrne (both come from the New York hipster scene). LCD's mix of discopunk sensibility with danceable tracks makes them an act to look out for. In the case of this mix, we took the one song that really stuck out from the rest of the tracks on the album and utilized bits and pieces from the remix. We then re-created and sequenced a DJ-friendly into and outro to make it workable for your nights. For any of you true fans out there, you'll be able to see what we did. 129 BPM. |
